Tohiro Konno is a Japanese manga artist best known for creating the four-panel comedy series Pugyuru. Konno made a professional debut after receiving an honorable mention in the third Nagai Go Newcomer Awards, a competition sponsored by Kodansha’s Monthly Magazine Z. The one-shot version of Pugyuru was published in the June 2001 issue of that magazine, marking Konno’s official entry into the manga industry.

The manga Pugyuru is Konno’s most recognized work. Serialized in Monthly Magazine Z from June 2001 until the magazine ceased publication in 2008, the series was compiled into seven collected volumes. The story follows a seemingly ordinary girl and her strange, tiny maid companion named Cheko-chan, engaging in surreal and absurd comedic situations. The series exemplifies Konno’s primary style, which focuses almost exclusively on yonkoma, or four-panel, gag comedy. In 2004, Pugyuru was adapted into an anime television series. The thirteen-episode short-form anime, which featured three-minute episodes, was directed by Hajime Kurihara and produced by the studio Two Thousand Creators.com. The anime aired on the Japanese network Kids Station, with Konno receiving credit as the original creator.

Beyond Pugyuru, Konno has authored several other manga series. These works include Kodomo Musou, which was serialized in Monthly Magazine Z until the magazine’s closure; Pua Pua?, which ran in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine from its inaugural issue in October 2009 until December 2012 and was collected in five volumes; Oga-chan, published in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Special; Komori-chan wa Yaru ki wo Dase, which began in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine before moving to Weekly Shonen Magazine; Desu Chichi, serialized in Futabasha’s Monthly Action; and Mahou Tsukaenai, which ran in Kodansha’s Morning Two. These works continue to demonstrate Konno’s commitment to comedy as a primary genre.

Tohiro Konno’s significance in the industry rests on a consistent body of work as a gag manga specialist. The artist’s career is characterized by a steady output of four-panel comedies across multiple major manga publications, with Pugyuru standing as the primary example of Konno’s work that has been adapted for television.
