Kōhei Azano
Description
Kōhei Azano is a Japanese novelist and manga writer, primarily known as the original creator of the supernatural action series Tokyo Ravens. Born on January 28, 1976, in Anan, Tokushima, Japan, Azano has built a career in the light novel and manga industries. He is also a member of the GoRA Project, a collective of writers focused on creating accessible entertainment.
Azano first gained recognition as the author of the light novel series Black Blood Brothers before achieving wider success with Tokyo Ravens. The Tokyo Ravens light novel series, illustrated by Sumihei, began publication under Fujimi Shobo's Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint on May 20, 2010. The series remained ongoing as of March 2025, with its 18th volume planned as the conclusion.
The success of the Tokyo Ravens light novels led to multiple manga adaptations and an anime television series. While Atsushi Suzumi illustrated the main manga adaptation serialized in Monthly Shōnen Ace from April 2010 to July 2017, Azano is consistently credited as the original creator. Several spin-off manga series were also produced based on his original work, including Tokyo Ravens: Red and White, Tokyo Ravens: Sword of Song, Tokyo Ravens: Girls Photograph, and Tokyo Ravens: Another×holiday. An anime adaptation animated by Eight Bit aired from October 2013 to March 2014, with Funimation licensing the series for English release.
As a creator, Azano's work draws heavily on Japanese mythology and occult traditions, particularly onmyōdō, the traditional Japanese esoteric cosmology and divination practices. Tokyo Ravens is set in a modern Tokyo where spiritual disasters are commonplace and onmyōji magic has been integrated into contemporary society and technology. The series explores themes of destiny, reincarnation, and the burden of legacy, following Harutora Tsuchimikado, a young man from a prestigious onmyōji family who initially appears to have no spiritual powers. The narrative structure balances action sequences with character-driven drama and romantic subplots. Azano's work is significant within the light novel medium for its sustained popularity over more than a decade and its successful expansion across multiple media formats, establishing Tokyo Ravens as a recognizable franchise in the supernatural action genre.
