Kenji Sonishi

Description
Kenji Sonishi is a Japanese manga artist born on February 2, 1969, in Sapporo, Hokkaido. He graduated from the University of Tsukuba with a degree in Visual Communication Design from its School of Art and Design. While still a university student, he won a manga award from Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, leading to his professional debut with the manga Nagare Rikishi Jako no Umi.

Sonishi is best known as the original creator of several manga series that have been adapted into anime. His most recognized work is Neko Rahmen, also known as Neko Ramen, a four-panel comic strip that began serialization in 2006. The comedy series centers on a cat named Taisho, a former kitten model who runs a ramen shop. The original manga was published by Mag Garden and ran until 2012. It was adapted into a flash anime television series produced by Think Corporation, which premiered in December 2006 and aired 13 episodes. The series was notable for being one of the first anime licensed exclusively by a US IPTV company for free download. A second anime season, Neko Rahmen: Ore no Shouyu Aji, was released in 2008, and a live-action film adaptation titled Neko Ramen Taisho was also produced.

Sonishi is also the creator behind Meow Meow Japanese History, known in Japanese as Neko Neko Nihonshi. The manga, which reinterprets Japanese historical events and figures as cats, was originally serialized on the online manga website COMIC ruelle. The series was adapted into an anime that began broadcasting on the Japanese public broadcaster NHK in April 2016. A second season premiered in April 2017, and the anime was later made available for international streaming on Crunchyroll.

Beyond these major titles, Sonishi has authored several other manga series. His work Leave It to PET! was published in English by Viz Media's children's imprint and follows the story of a super robot created from a recycled plastic bottle who is programmed to protect a young boy. This series reflects a recurring theme in Sonishi's work of giving personalities and stories to unconventional subjects. He is also known for other series such as Lagger-nyan and Neko Pitcher, which has been serialized in the Sunday edition of the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper.

Across his body of work, a clear and consistent artistic identity emerges. Sonishi repeatedly uses animals, particularly cats, as central characters to explore ordinary human activities and historical narratives. This approach blends humor with educational content, as seen in the historical parody of Meow Meow Japanese History and the workplace comedy of Neko Rahmen. His work is typically aimed at a broad audience, including children and young adults, as evidenced by the age ratings for his English publications and the broadcast of his anime adaptations on public television. Kenji Sonishi has established himself as a significant creator of lighthearted, character-driven manga whose work has successfully transitioned to television animation and live-action film.
