Shōko Iwami
Description
Shōko Iwami, also written with the kanji characters 石見翔子, is a Japanese manga artist from Fukui Prefecture. She began her career in the world of doujinshi, or self-published works, before moving into professional serialization. Her first original manga series to be serialized was Suzunari!, which ran in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara MAX magazine starting in 2004.
Iwami is best known as the original creator of Kanamemo, a four-panel comic strip that was serialized in the same seinen magazine, Manga Time Kirara MAX, from April 2007 to October 2013. The story follows a young orphaned girl named Kana Nakamachi as she begins working and living at a newspaper delivery office. The series is a representative example of the "slice of life" and comedy genres that were popular in the magazine at the time. Kanamemo was well-received and was adapted into a thirteen-episode anime television series. The anime adaptation was produced by the studio Feel and aired in Japan on TV Tokyo from July to September 2009.
Beyond her original works, Iwami has also been the illustrator for manga adaptations of other media. She provided the art for the manga version of the visual novel Flyable Heart and was the artist for the manga adaptation of the song and story project Senbon Sakura. She also worked as the illustrator for Mushoku Tensei: Roxy Gets Serious, a spin-off manga of the popular series Mushoku Tensei.
Thematically, Iwami's original work, particularly Kanamemo, is noted for its focus on the daily lives of young women, combining comedic situations with elements of yuri, or romantic relationships between female characters. Her artistic identity is rooted in the four-panel comic strip format and the aesthetics of the Manga Time Kirara magazine line, which often centers on cute and lighthearted stories about groups of girls. Her success with Kanamemo, from its original manga run to an anime adaptation, marks her as a creator who contributed to the significant wave of such series that gained mainstream popularity in the late 2000s.
