Description
Akinari Matsuno was a Japanese light novelist born in 1979 in Kawanishi, Hyogo Prefecture. He began his professional writing career in 2005 when his debut work, originally titled The Selfish Battleship of Class 2-3, received the Brilliancy Prize in the first MF Bunko J Light Novel Rookie Award. This work was later published under the title Aoba-kun and Uchuu-jin.
Matsuno is best known as the creator of the light novel series MM!, which began publication in 2007. The series centers on a high school student named Taro Sado who possesses a masochistic fetish and joins his school`s volunteer club in an attempt to cure his condition, leading to various romantic comedy situations. The light novels were illustrated by the artist group QP:flapper. The series achieved significant commercial success, with cumulative sales surpassing one million copies by the time the sixth volume was released in October 2008.
The MM! franchise expanded beyond its original light novel format. A manga adaptation illustrated by Issei Hyoju was serialized in Monthly Comic Alive starting in July 2008. The property was also adapted into a twelve-episode anime television series produced by the studio XEBEC, which aired from October to December 2010. The anime adaptation brought the story and its characters to a wider audience. Matsuno is solely credited as the original creator of the series across these various media.
Akinari Matsuno passed away on April 18, 2011, at the age of 32. His death was sudden, and the official cause was not publicly disclosed, though reports indicate he had been ill since 2010. His passing meant that the MM! light novel series remained incomplete, with its final volume published in September 2010. His death was noted by colleagues in the industry, including manga artist Kaishaku and light novelist Heibon Reading, who attended his funeral.
