Eiji Hashimoto

Description
Eiji Hashimoto is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator born on January 27, 1978, in Saitama Prefecture. He is best known for his long-term collaboration with writer Shinya Umemura, primarily serving as the artist for several manga series. Hashimoto's most significant and enduring work is the historical action manga Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem, which began serialization in Monthly Comic Zenon in 2010. The series dramatizes the lives of the Shinsengumi, a special police force active in Kyoto during the late Edo period of Japanese history, focusing on figures such as vice-commander Toshizō Hijikata.

In this partnership, Umemura is credited with the original story and composition, while Hashimoto is responsible for the artwork. Together, they created the original Chiruran series and its comedic spin-off, Chiruran 1/2, which reimagines the same historical warriors in a lighthearted, everyday setting. This spin-off was adapted into a short-form anime television series that premiered in Japan in January 2017. The main Chiruran series has been compiled into numerous collected volumes, with French publisher Mangetsu releasing the editions for the international market.

Beyond the Chiruran franchise, Hashimoto's bibliography as an artist includes several other series written by various authors. His earlier works include the medical crime drama E.D.D - Eliminate Dangerous Doctors from 2006, the historical action series Tenshou no Ryoma from 2009, and the street-fighting story Ikkyuu from 2011. More recent projects include Rappa - Yankee Ninpuuchou, which began in 2024, and the post-apocalyptic survival story Shuumatsu, Nani Taberu?, which started in 2025. He has also worked on titles such as Tokyo 23.

Hashimoto's artistic identity is closely tied to the seinen demographic, with his work frequently featuring action, historical settings, martial arts, and delinquent or samurai protagonists. His art style is noted for its dynamic and expressive quality, effectively bringing both intense battle sequences and comedic character interactions to life. Through his extensive and long-running collaboration with Shinya Umemura, particularly on the Chiruran franchise and its anime adaptation, Eiji Hashimoto has established himself as a significant contributor to the historical action genre in modern manga.
