Saori Oguri
Description
Saori Oguri is a Japanese manga artist born on December 10, 1966, in Seki, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. She is a graduate of Tama Art University, where she studied graphic design. Oguri made her professional debut in 1995 with the work Sora ni makka na mono relu, which was published in the shōjo manga magazine Chorus by Shueisha. Her early works include Onegai kami-sama (1998) and Kono ai no hate ni (2000), also published by Shueisha.
Oguri is best known as the creator of the comic essay series Darling wa Gaikokujin, which translates literally to My Darling is a Foreigner and is known in English as Is He Turning Japanese? The series, which began publication in 2002 by Media Factory, is a semi-autobiographical work that depicts her everyday life and cultural exchanges with her husband, Tony László, who is of Hungarian and Italian descent. The series was adapted into a live-action comedy film titled My Darling is a Foreigner, which was released in April 2010.
Beyond the core series, Oguri co-authored with her husband a related work titled Darling no Atamannaka (Inside Darling's Mind), a comic essay exploring themes of English language and linguistics. Her other published works include Kanayako (2004), Saori & Tony Bōken kikō Hawaii de dai no ji (2005), and Eigo ga dekinai watashi o semenaide! ― I want to speak English! (2004). In 2012, Oguri relocated from Japan to Berlin, Germany.
