Kiraku Kishima

Description
Kiraku Kishima is a Japanese author known primarily as the original creator of the fantasy light novel series Shinmai Ossan Bōkensha, Saikyō Party ni Shinu Hodo Kitaerarete Muteki ni Naru, which is also known as The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible. This series serves as the foundation for a multimedia franchise that includes a manga adaptation and an anime television series.

Kishima began the story as a web novel, first serializing it on the user-generated publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō before moving it to the Kakuyomu website in June 2018. The series was later acquired by Hobby Japan, which began publishing it as a light novel with illustrations by Tea under its HJ Novels imprint in December 2018. As of early 2025, the light novel series remains ongoing with multiple volumes released. The story follows Rick Gladiator, a thirty-two-year-old former guild receptionist who pursues his dream of becoming an adventurer, having been secretly trained to an S-rank level by the continent's most powerful party, the Orichalcum Fist.

The success of the light novel led to a manga adaptation illustrated by Ken Ogino, which began serialization on Hobby Japan's Comic Fire website in November 2019. The manga has been compiled into several tankōbon volumes and continues to be published alongside the original novels. A twelve-episode anime television adaptation produced by Yumeta Company aired from July to September 2024, with Shin Katagai serving as director and Kasumi Tsuchida handling series composition.

Beyond his most famous work, Kishima is also the author of another light novel series titled Back to the Battlefield: The Veteran Heroes Return to the Fray!, which features illustrations by peroshi. Hobby Japan published the first volume of this series in March 2022 under the HJ Novels label. This series has also spawned a manga adaptation by artist Yasunari Toda, which is serialized on Hobby Japan's Fire Cross manga website. In April 2024, Kishima collaborated with writer Tohokō and artist XPierrot to launch a new manga titled Tsuma ka Shi ka: Haisenkoku no Onna-tachi, which began serialization in Akita Shoten's Champion RED magazine.

Kishima's body of work demonstrates a recurring interest in protagonists who defy conventional expectations, particularly those who achieve greatness later in life or return to prominence after being underestimated. The central premise of Shinmai Ossan Bōkensha, focusing on a middle-aged protagonist rather than the typical teenage hero, has been noted as a distinguishing characteristic that helped the series gain traction in the fantasy genre. This thematic focus on second chances and unconventional paths to heroism appears consistent across Kishima's creative portfolio, suggesting a deliberate artistic identity centered on subverting age-based assumptions about capability and potential.

The progression of Kishima's career from web novel writer to published light novel author, and subsequently to creator of manga and anime adaptations, follows a common trajectory in contemporary Japanese media. Starting on user-generated platforms like Shōsetsuka ni Narō and Kakuyomu allowed Kishima to build an audience before professional publication, a path that has become increasingly significant in the light novel industry. The adaptation of Shinmai Ossan Bōkensha into an anime by Yumeta Company, with distribution on international platforms such as Crunchyroll, has brought Kishima's work to a global audience, contributing to the growing market for fantasy anime and light novels featuring non-traditional protagonists.
