Kohske
Description
Kohske is a Japanese manga artist born on September 14, 1985, in Sapporo, Hokkaido. She made her professional debut in February 2009 with the short story Postman, published in Shonen GanGan magazine, followed by another one-shot, The Man I Love, three months later. Her first serialized work, Gangsta., launched in March 2011 in the pages of Monthly Comic@Bunch and became an immediate success. The series follows Nicolas Brown, a deaf mercenary and superhuman known as a Twilight, and Worick Arcangelo, a shrewd gigolo, as they undertake dangerous jobs for various crime syndicates in the corrupt city of Ergastulum.
The popularity of Gangsta. led to an anime adaptation produced by Studio Manglobe, which aired in 2015. In the same year, the manga series had surpassed one million copies in print with six volumes. Kohske also served as the writer for the spin-off series Gangsta: Cursed, which focuses on the character Marco Adriano and was illustrated by Syuhei Kamo, a former assistant on the original series. She has been open about her improvisational approach to storytelling, noting in a postscript that she did not have the world fully planned out from the beginning and developed the plot as the series progressed.
Beyond Gangsta., Kohske launched another series titled Doodle in 2013, published in Go Go Bunch, which tells the story of a white monster serving a child. The same year, she began providing illustrations for the Indigo no Yoru novel series by author Miaki Kato. She has stated that she does not frequently consume anime or manga, instead drawing inspiration from Hollywood movies and foreign television dramas. The series experienced a two-year hiatus due to a chronic illness, with Kohske resuming publication in May 2017. She continues to share illustrations and updates about her work online.
