Koushun Takami is a Japanese author and journalist, recognized as the creator of the original story for several manga series, most notably Battle Royale. He was born on January 10, 1969, in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, near Osaka, and grew up in Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku. His birth name is Hiroharu Takami, and the pen name Koushun is a play on the kanji characters meaning "large spring," using their alternative pronunciation. He studied literature at Osaka University and later earned a certificate to teach English at the junior high school level through a correspondence course from Nihon University. Before dedicating himself to writing fiction, Takami worked for five years as a reporter for the Shikoku Shimbun newspaper from 1991 to 1996, covering a variety of beats including politics, police reports, and economics.

Takami is best known for his debut novel, Battle Royale, which remains his sole published novel. He completed the manuscript after leaving his job at the newspaper. The novel was initially rejected in the final round of the 1997 Japan Grand Prix Horror Novel competition due to its controversial premise involving junior high school students forced to kill one another. However, upon its publication in April 1999, it became an instant bestseller and achieved significant cultural impact. The story has since been adapted into various formats, establishing a significant adaptation history. In 2000, only a year after the novel's release, a manga adaptation was serialized, and a live-action film directed by Kinji Fukasaku was released. The novel was later adapted into a second live-action film and has been translated into over a dozen languages.

In addition to the original manga series, Takami has been credited as the original creator for several other related works. He wrote the screenplay for the manga Battle Royale II: Blitz Royale, which serves as a sequel to the original story. Furthermore, in 2012, a spin-off manga titled Battle Royale: Angel’s Border was published, with the story written by Takami himself. His involvement extends to scripting and original concept creation for these manga adaptations, solidifying his role as a central creative force in the franchise.

Thematically, Takami’s work, particularly Battle Royale, is known for its exploration of survival, societal breakdown, and the dark aspects of human nature under extreme pressure. The controversial and intense narrative has garnered a global cult following and has been critically acclaimed, with figures like Stephen King praising the novel.
