Kawada
Description
Kawada is a Japanese manga artist best known as the creator of the sumo-themed series Hinomaru Sumo. He is also the author of the ongoing mixed martial arts manga Martial Master Asumi. His career is defined by his long association with Weekly Shonen Jump, where he has built a reputation for sports narratives centered on traditional and competitive fighting disciplines.
Kawada made his professional debut in the early 2010s after receiving an honorable mention at the 77th Tezuka Awards in 2009 for a short story called Love and Justice. Despite advice to serialize his work in a magazine for a younger audience, Kawada was determined to publish in a shonen magazine. He gained experience by working as an assistant to Tadatoshi Fujimaki, the creator of the popular basketball manga Kuroko's Basketball. This period helped him hone his craft for Weekly Shonen Jump, the prominent anthology where he would later find success.
His first major serialized work, Hinomaru Sumo, began in Weekly Shonen Jump in May 2014 and concluded in July 2019. The series, which he wrote and illustrated, was collected into 28 tankobon volumes. The story focuses on a short but determined high school wrestler who aspires to reach the highest rank in professional sumo. The manga’s popularity led to a 24-episode anime television adaptation produced by the studio Gonzo, which aired from October 2018 to March 2019. After a four-year hiatus, Kawada returned to Weekly Shonen Jump in June 2023 with Martial Master Asumi, a series centered on mixed martial arts. In the intervening period, he also published several one-shot stories, including Heavy Metal Yankees in 2020 and Rebellion in 2022.
