Kazuichi Hanawa

Description
Kazuichi Hanawa is a Japanese manga artist born on April 17, 1947 in Yorii, Saitama Prefecture. He began his career in 1970 as an illustrator, but after reading the works of Yoshiharu Tsuge, he decided to focus on comic books. His debut as a manga creator came in 1971 with the short story Kan no Mushi, which was published in the influential alternative manga magazine Garo. Throughout his career, Hanawa has been primarily associated with Garo and its successor magazine AX, though he has also worked for mainstream publications such as Afternoon, Manga Action, and Super Action.

Hanawa is best known for his autobiographical work Doing Time, which recounts his experience in prison after being arrested in December 1994 for illegally possessing modified model weapons. He was sentenced to three years in prison, and after his release he created this manga, serialized in AX from 1998 to 2000. Doing Time became a bestseller and received a film adaptation in 2002 directed by Yoichi Sai. The work was nominated for the 2001 Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize and the 2006 Angoulême International Comics Festival Prize for Scenario. Other notable manga series include Tensui, serialized in Afternoon from 1992 to 1994, as well as Gōho Dōji, Otogizōshi, Nippon Mukashibanashi, Fujōbutsu Rei Dōjo, and Keimusho no Mae.

Hanawa is sometimes considered a successor to Yoshiharu Tsuge. Early in his career, he worked in the ero-guro style, creating erotic-grotesque works such as Akai Yoru that often served as parodies of militarism and traditional Japanese cultural values. Beginning in the 1980s, his manga became more spiritually influenced by Buddhism, with stories typically set in Japan's Edo and Meiji periods as well as futuristic settings. His artistic style is characterized by detailed, dark drawings with character faces reminiscent of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The realism in works like Doing Time has been described as documentary-like and almost overwhelming to the reader. His work has been translated into English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian. The character Hanawa Kazuhiko from the popular series Chibi Maruko-chan was named after him by the author Momoko Sakura.
