Sawayoshi Azuma
Description
Sawayoshi Azuma is a Japanese manga artist and writer, recognized as the original creator behind the series Oroka na Tenshi wa Akuma to Odoru, known in English as The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil. Azuma is credited as both the author and illustrator of the manga, which began serialization in ASCII Media Works' seinen manga magazine Dengeki Maoh in June 2016. The series is still ongoing, and its chapters have been compiled into multiple tankōbon volumes, with the first released in December 2016.
The manga, a romantic comedy set against a backdrop of conflict between heaven and hell, follows the demon Masatora Akutsu and the angel Lily Amane. Its popularity led to an anime television series adaptation. The anime, produced by Children's Playground Entertainment in cooperation with Gaina, aired for 12 episodes from January to March 2024. Azuma is formally credited as the original creator and original character designer for the anime adaptation.
In addition to the main series, Azuma is also credited as the original creator for a spin-off manga titled Midara na Sotai wa Sei ni Mezameru. This series, illustrated by Suimin, was serialized in the same Dengeki Maoh magazine from November 2022 to March 2024.
Azuma's artistic identity is defined by the long-running success of Oroka na Tenshi wa Akuma to Odoru, which forms the core of their notable published works. The series exemplifies a narrative style that blends supernatural conflict with romantic comedy and character-driven humor. The adaptation of this work into a televised anime series marks a significant point in Azuma's career, bringing the original story to a broader audience and affirming its place within the contemporary manga and anime industry.
