Taku Kuwabara

Description
Taku Kuwabara is a Japanese manga artist born on May 20, 1985, in Sapporo, Japan. He studied visual communication design at Musashino Art University.

Kuwabara's professional debut came after he submitted work to the Afternoon Four Seasons Award, which led to the creation of his early series Taka no Dai Freaks. He later received an honorable mention in the spring 2011 Afternoon Four Season Awards for his work Mimi Kuri. Another notable early work is the series Tokkabu: Tokubetsu Kagai Katsudou-bu.

Kuwabara is best known as the creator of Drifting Dragons, known in Japanese as Kūtei Doragonzu. The series is written and illustrated by Kuwabara and has been serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine good! Afternoon since June 7, 2016. Kodansha has compiled the series into multiple tankōbon volumes, with the first volume released on November 7, 2016. The series is published digitally in English by Kodansha USA under the Kodansha Comics imprint. Drifting Dragons was nominated for the Manga Taisho award in 2017.

The story follows the crew of the airship Quin Zaza as they hunt dragons for food and materials, blending fantasy adventure with elements of a gourmet narrative. The series received an original net animation adaptation produced by the studio Polygon Pictures, which premiered in January 2020. Tadahiro Yoshihira directed the adaptation, with Makoto Uezu handling the screenplay and Masaru Yokoyama composing the music.

Kuwabara's artistic identity is characterized by detailed world-building and a focus on the daily routines and occupational aspects of his characters' lives, drawing comparisons to the transporting fantasy style of creators like Hayao Miyazaki. His work often explores the relationship between humans and fantastical creatures through a lens that emphasizes practical, everyday concerns such as cooking and resource management.
