Description
Ken Kawasaki is the original creator of the manga series Tonbo!, also known as Oi! Tonbo. He is credited as the writer of the story, which is illustrated by artist Yū Furusawa. The series has been serialized in the Japanese golf magazine Weekly Golf Digest, published by Golf Digest, since its debut on August 4, 2014.
The manga, which falls into the sports genre with a focus on golf, remains in publication and has been collected into numerous tankōbon volumes, with circulation exceeding 2.2 million copies as of late 2024. The story follows Kazuyoshi Igarashi, a former professional golfer, who travels to the remote fictional island of Hinoshima in the Tokara archipelago. There, he meets Tonbo Ōi, a junior high school girl who possesses an extraordinary, self-taught talent for golf, which she developed playing on a rustic three-hole course with only a single 3-iron that belonged to her late father.
The manga was adapted into an anime television series, which premiered in April 2024. The anime was produced by the animation studio OLM, with CG production by SMDE. The first season of 13 episodes aired from April to June 2024, and a second season of 13 episodes followed from October 2024 to January 2025. The adaptation brought the story of Tonbo’s journey from a hidden island prodigy to a competitor in regional and national golf tournaments to a wider audience.
Kawasaki’s work on Tonbo! is noted for its emphasis on character development and the authentic, natural beauty of its island setting, using golf as a vehicle to explore themes of personal growth, the value of unorthodox creativity, and finding one's place in the world. The series has been recognized for its influence within the golf community, winning the Reader’s Award at the Golf Digest Awards in 2016.
