Tomohiro Hashimoto

Description
Tomohiro Hashimoto is a Japanese manga artist born on February 28, 1978, in Owariasahi, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He is primarily recognized for his work on the manga series Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues, which was adapted into an anime titled Mr. Tonegawa. Early in his career, he worked as an assistant to the renowned manga creator Nobuyuki Fukumoto, known for the gambling-themed series Kaiji. This professional relationship would later prove foundational to his most prominent work.

Hashimoto made his professional debut in 2004 with the work Ashisuro, which was published in a pachinko and pachislot magazine under the pen name Hashimoto Shougo. He continued to work primarily within that niche for several years. In 2015, his career took a significant turn when he began illustrating the manga Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues. The series is a comedic spin-off of Nobuyuki Fukumoto's Kaiji, focusing on the daily struggles of Tonegawa, a middle manager who serves the tyrannical chairman of the Teiai Group. For this series, Hashimoto abandoned his pen name and began working under his real name, collaborating with co-illustrator Tomoki Miyoshi and writer Tensei Hagiwara. The manga was first serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Young Magazine and later moved to the Comic Days app.

The success of the manga led to an anime television adaptation, Mr. Tonegawa, which aired in 2018. In the credits for the anime, Tomohiro Hashimoto is listed as one of the original manga creators. Beyond his work on Mr. Tonegawa, his other known manga works include Kiyomi no Omotenashi 〜 Buta Horomone 〜 from 2015, Koyoi no Akuma Teishoku from 2016, and Gokujou! Sauna Meshi from 2018.

Hashimoto's artistic identity is closely tied to the distinct visual style and narrative world established by Nobuyuki Fukumoto. His role in creating a comedic slice-of-life story within the typically high-stakes, psychological environment of the Kaiji series demonstrates an ability to adapt and expand an existing universe in a new direction. His industry significance lies in his contribution to the broader Fukumoto-verse, proving that spin-off works focusing on secondary characters can achieve their own popularity and receive full anime adaptations. He continues to be an active figure in manga creation, noted for being one of the few artists from the circle working on Kaiji spin-offs who also produces other independent manga works.
