Chisato Abe
Description
Chisato Abe is a Japanese novelist and the original creator of the Yatagarasu fantasy novel series, which has been adapted into multiple manga series and a television anime. She was born in 1991 in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Abe wrote the first volume of the Yatagarasu series, Karasu ni Hitoe wa Niawanai, while she was a student at Waseda University. This debut work won the Matsumoto Seicho Award, making her the youngest recipient of that literary prize at the time of its receipt.
The Yatagarasu series is Abe's primary body of work and is published in Japan by Bungeishunju under their Bunshun Bunko imprint. The series is set in the fictional world of Yamauchi, which is inhabited by the Yatagarasu, a race of three-legged crows who can transform into human form. The narrative blends political intrigue, coming-of-age drama, and fantasy elements within a setting inspired by Japan's Heian era. As of 2024, the series comprised twelve main novels and had sold over 2.3 million copies. The first major story arc concluded with the sixth volume, Karasu no Yaei, and a new saga began with the 2020 volume Rakuen no Karasu.
Abe's work has been adapted into other media, beginning with a manga adaptation of the first novel, Karasu ni Hitoe wa Niawanai, with artwork by Natsumi Matsuzaki, which launched on Kodansha's Comic DAYS platform in 2018. A second manga adaptation, Karasu wa Aruji o Erabanai, based on the second novel, began serialization in 2021. A television anime adaptation of Karasu wa Aruji o Erabanai, titled YATAGARASU: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master, was produced by Studio Pierrot and broadcast on NHK from April to September 2024. Yoshiaki Kyogoku directed the anime, with series composition by Yukiko Yamamuro. The production uniquely credited manga artist Natsumi Matsuzaki as a design consultant to ensure the involvement of both the original novelist and the manga adaptation team.
