Jung Wook Kim

Description
Jung Wook Kim is a South Korean creator known for his work as an illustrator and original creator in the manhwa and anime industries. He is best recognized as the co-creator, alongside writer Hyun Dong Han, of the long-running educational manhwa series Survival. This full-color comic series, which began publication in 2008, is designed to teach scientific concepts to young readers by placing child characters in various dangerous and adventurous scenarios. The series has been a significant commercial success, with worldwide sales exceeding 28 million copies, and has been published in multiple languages, including English by No Starch Press.

The popularity of the Survival manhwa led to its adaptation into several animated projects in Japan, where it is known as Kagaku Manga Survival. Jung Wook Kim is consistently credited as an original creator for these productions. The first was an original net animation produced by Toei Animation and released in March 2019. This was followed by two anime film adaptations: Jintai no Survival, released in July 2020, and Shinkai no Survival, released in August 2021. Most recently, a television anime series titled Surviving Science! premiered on Japan's NHK Educational TV in October 2024, with a second season announced for October 2025. These anime adaptations, produced by studios such as Toei Animation and Gallop, continue the premise of children using scientific knowledge to overcome survival challenges.

Beyond his role as a creator, Jung Wook Kim has also worked as a key animator on other major anime productions, including providing key animation for episodes of the long-running series Naruto. This combination of roles demonstrates his engagement with the animation industry both as a source material creator and as a production staff member. The Survival series represents a notable example of a South Korean manhwa achieving widespread international recognition and successful multimedia adaptation within the Japanese anime industry.
