Genshō Yasuda

Description
Genshō Yasuda is an anime creator, director, and screenwriter who first gained recognition as an independent animator before making his feature film debut. He began his career by creating and sharing short animations on social media platforms, where he amassed a significant following for his solo efforts, which often featured original 3DCG works including shorts with fox girls and robots. These animations were primarily created using the open-source 3D software Blender and Adobe After Effects.

His professional background includes work as a CG animator at Nitroplus, a company known for titles such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Steins;Gate, which he has cited as major artistic influences, particularly for their strong science fiction elements and the way they redefine the problems faced by their protagonists. In 2021, he founded his own production entity, Yasuda Gensho Studio, which later formed a collaboration with the 3D CG studio Xenotoon to become Yasuda Gensho Studio by Xenotoon.

Yasuda’s most notable work originated with a 2.5-minute independent 3DCG short film titled Make Love, which was released on February 8, 2020. This short was an award-winning entry in the 29th CG Animation Contest, recognized as Japan’s oldest CG animation contest. This short served as the foundation for his first feature-length project, the anime film Make a Girl.

For Make a Girl, Yasuda assumed multiple key creative roles, including director, screenplay writer, storyboard artist, technical director, and CG director. The film represents his transition from a solo creator to working with a team. A crowdfunding campaign for the project was launched in August 2022 with a goal of 10 million yen and concluded successfully in October 2022, raising over 23 million yen. The film had its world premiere in Hollywood in November 2024 before opening in Japanese theaters on January 31, 2025.

Following the release of Make a Girl, it was announced that Yasuda’s second anime feature film project is scheduled to launch in 2027.

A recurring aspect of Yasuda’s artistic identity is his exploration of science fiction concepts, particularly the premise of scientifically creating a girlfriend. He has expressed interest in the multiple meanings of the phrase to make a girlfriend, considering interpretations such as making one in a literary, philosophical, or scientific sense. His creative process and professional evolution have been noted for his journey from an independent creator who prioritized speed to share work online to the director of a full-length theatrical production who emphasizes the value of teamwork and detailed expression. His significant social media following, cultivated during his years as an independent artist, has been acknowledged as a key factor in creating opportunities for larger projects.
