Satoshi Iriyama

Description
Satoshi Iriyama is a Japanese author and illustrator, born in Tokyo in 1958. His career began with work in character design and as a greeting card designer before he established himself as a successful freelance illustrator. He is known for creating numerous picture books for young children, a field in which his distinctive, warm visual style has gained a significant following.

While Iriyama’s career started with character design, his most prominent body of work consists of original picture books rather than serialized manga or anime series. Among his notable original creations are several series focused on animal characters. He is the creator of a series of books about a panda, which has been published in multiple countries under titles such as Panda Exercise and Samba Panda. This series includes the book Panda Narikiri Taisō. He is also the author of the widely popular Little Piyo series, known in Japan as the Little Chick Piyo books, which has sold over ten million copies worldwide. Other recurring characters appear in works such as the Green Bear and Red Bear series. Iriyama has also published individual picture books, including When I Take Off My Mask, Pocket Cat, Rolling Panda, and Au dodo maintenant!, the latter of which follows five raccoon siblings getting ready for bed.

There is no indication that Iriyama’s original works have been adapted into other media, such as animated series or films; his career has been primarily dedicated to the creation of original illustrated children’s books. His artistic identity is defined by a gentle, expressive style often created with soft pastels and colored pencils, a technique noted for producing warm and delicate images that appeal to very young readers.

Within the field of children’s literature, Iriyama is recognized as an influential international figure whose works have been translated and published in numerous countries. His contributions to illustrated children’s books have established him as a significant creator in the genre, known for crafting endearing characters and engaging visual narratives for a preschool audience.
