Tom Grummett
Description
Tom Grummett is a Canadian comic book artist and penciller, born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1959. He is best known for his extensive work on major American superhero titles for DC Comics and Marvel Comics rather than for creating original anime or manga works. His career in the comic book industry began in the late 1980s, with early work including finished artwork over George Pérez's layouts on The New Titans. He contributed to the storyline A Lonely Place of Dying, which introduced the character Tim Drake as the new Robin.
Grummett became a significant figure at DC Comics during the 1990s. He was the main artist on The Adventures of Superman and was one of the architects of the landmark Death of Superman storyline, during which he and writer Karl Kesel co-created the contemporary version of Superboy. Following this, he helped launch ongoing solo series for both Robin and Superboy as a regular penciller. His other notable DC work includes contributing to the Batman: Knightfall saga and co-creating the series Power Company with writer Kurt Busiek.
At Marvel Comics, Grummett has had significant runs on series such as Thunderbolts, New Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four. In 2009, he collaborated with writer Chris Claremont to co-create the X-Men Forever series. In addition to his work for the major publishers, he worked with writer Karl Kesel on Section Zero, a creator-owned project initially launched under the Gorilla Comics imprint.
Throughout his career, Grummett has primarily worked as a penciller, providing the foundational artwork for comics scripts. His artistic identity is closely associated with mainstream superhero comics of the 1990s and 2000s. In recognition of his contributions to the comics field, he received an Inkpot Award in 2015.
