Aya Hirakawa
Description
Aya Hirakawa is a Japanese manga artist and writer known for creating romantic comedy and shōnen manga series, primarily serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine. Hirakawa made their debut in the manga industry with a one-shot titled Kunisaki Izumo no Jijou, published on February 18, 2009, which later became a full series starting on January 29, 2010. This early work centered on a young man with delicate features who performs female roles in Kabuki theater while aspiring to portray male characters, incorporating elements of battle manga into its theatrical setting.
Following this, Hirakawa created Tenshi to Akuto!!, a romantic comedy series serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from December 2014 to May 2018. The story follows an arrogant high school boy with an effeminate voice who is manipulated into providing the voice for a female lead character in an anime research society's cultural festival project.
Hirakawa is currently best known for the manga series Mikadono San Shimai wa Angai, Choroi, which began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Sunday on December 22, 2021 and remains ongoing. The series is a home romantic comedy about a talentless high school boy named Yuu Ayase who, after the death of his famous actress mother, comes to live with three exceptionally gifted sisters who are prodigies in acting, martial arts, and academics. The manga has been collected into multiple tankōbon volumes, with thirteen volumes released as of March 2025. The series has achieved commercial success, with over one million copies in circulation by July 2024, and received recognition through nominations for the Next Manga Award, ranking fifteenth in 2022 and eighth in 2023.
An anime television adaptation of Mikadono San Shimai wa Angai, Choroi was announced in July 2024, with production handled by P.A. Works and Aniplex. The series premiered on July 10, 2025, with Tadahito Matsubayashi directing and Takayo Ikami handling series composition. Hirakawa is credited as the original creator of the work, with the adaptation comprising twelve episodes that aired through September 2025.
Across their body of work, Hirakawa has demonstrated a recurring interest in romantic comedy narratives centered on ordinary protagonists interacting with exceptionally talented or eccentric characters. Themes of self-identity, particularly regarding gender presentation and the pressure of living up to family legacy, appear across their early and later works. All of Hirakawa's major serializations have been published by Shogakukan in the shōnen demographic.
