Uru Okabe
Description
Uru Okabe is a Japanese manga artist and writer known for creating original manga series that often explore dark themes within the context of modern society. Okabe began drawing in the third grade of elementary school for a cultural festival project, collaborating with classmates on a ten-page manga after receiving encouragement from a teacher. The decision to pursue a professional career as a manga creator came around the age of eighteen. Initially, Okabe created works independently on a computer and shared them online for free across various platforms.
The path to professional debut began in 2011 when Okabe posted early chapters of World War Demons on the Neetsha website. The work quickly caught the attention of an editor from Shogakukan who was launching a new web comic initiative called Ura Sunday, a platform designed for modern and unconventional shonen manga. World War Demons found a home there and began its official serialization in 2012, marking Okabe’s professional debut.
Following the conclusion of World War Demons, Okabe began work on Good Night World, which was serialized on the Ura Sunday website and the MangaOne service from December 2015 to January 2017. The series was compiled into five collected volumes published by Shogakukan under the Ura Sunday Comics imprint. In 2023, a prequel manga titled Good Night World End was serialized on the MangaOne service from August 2023 to May 2024, with its chapters collected into three volumes.
Good Night World gained wider recognition with its adaptation as an original net animation series. The anime was produced by the studio NAZ, directed by Katsuya Kikuchi, with scripts by Michiko Yokote and music by Takatsugu Wakabayashi. It premiered globally on Netflix on October 12, 2023, consisting of twelve episodes.
The body of work created by Uru Okabe is characterized by narratives that examine dysfunctional relationships and the darker aspects of contemporary life. World War Demons features a cast of antiheroes dealing with trauma, abuse, and moral ambiguity as they are drawn into a surreal struggle. The series has been described as a dark and complex story that does not spare its characters from difficult circumstances. Good Night World centers on a broken family whose members, unknown to one another, form a supportive virtual family within an online game, exploring themes of escapism, deception, and the blurring line between digital and real-world identities. The work has been noted for its complex action and its lucid, somber portrait of modern society.
