Hiroe Aoki

Description
Hiroe Aoki is a Japanese creator known primarily for illustrated picture books. Born in 1963 in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, Aoki began a career in illustration after working at the Spoon illustration group. The debut picture book was Papa to Boku.

Aoki is notably credited as an illustrator and author for the Nandeyanen series of picture books. The first book in the series, simply titled Nandeyanen, was published in 2013. For this initial entry, Hirotaka Nakagawa is credited with the text, Tsubasa Suzuki with the original concept, and Hiroe Aoki with the illustrations. Subsequent books in the series, such as Ofuro de Nandeyanen (2017), Yūenchi de Nandeyanen (2018), Mahō de Nandeyanen (2019), and Umi de Nandeyanen (2022), credit Suzuki and Aoki together for both the text and illustrations, without Nakagawa's involvement. The series is characterized by humorous, everyday situations and was adapted into a "light anime" format that began streaming in December 2024.

Beyond the Nandeyanen series, Aoki has a substantial body of work in children's publishing. Other titles include Bonchan no bon'yasumi (2010), Harunatsu Akifuyu Oishii Otsukedai (2024), and contributions to works such as Kiki Mimi Sūpu Tomasu. The artistic identity often draws from personal memory and explores themes of family, seasonal activities, and shared experiences like cooking.

Aoki's career also extends into cultural curation and academia. Aoki was a planner for Tsugihagiso, a yose hall for rakugo traditional comedic storytelling, and for a picture book gallery. Additionally, Aoki served as a specially appointed professor.
