Yūsei Matsui
Description
Yusei Matsui is a Japanese manga artist known for creating several notable series serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. He was born on January 31, 1979, in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. Before launching his own career, Matsui worked as an assistant to Yoshio Sawai, the creator of the comedic manga Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo.
Matsui made his professional debut with Neuro: Supernatural Detective, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from February 2005 to April 2009 and collected in 23 tankobon volumes. The series follows Yako Katsuragi, a high school student who forms a partnership with Neuro Nogami, a demon from hell who feeds on mysteries. An anime television adaptation consisting of 25 episodes was produced by Madhouse and aired from October 2007 to March 2008.
His next major work, Assassination Classroom, became a significant commercial and critical success. Serialized from July 2012 to March 2016, the series was collected in 21 volumes. The premise centers on a class of misfit students tasked with assassinating their alien teacher, Koro Sensei, before he destroys the Earth. The manga was adapted into an anime television series, as well as live-action films. Assassination Classroom was a consistent bestseller and received wide international distribution.
Matsui's third long-running series is The Elusive Samurai, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in January 2021 and concluded in February 2026, with its chapters collected in 23 volumes as of December 2025. Set in 14th-century Japan, the story follows Hojo Tokiyuki, a young heir who must use his exceptional skill at fleeing and hiding to survive after his family is betrayed and overthrown. The series won the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2024 in the shonen category. An anime television series adaptation produced by CloverWorks aired its first season from July to September 2024, with a second season announced to premiere in July 2026.
Throughout his career, Matsui has also produced several one-shot manga, including Rikon Choutei in 2009, Tokyo Depato Sensou Taikenki in 2011, and F-Ken in 2019. Recurring elements in his work include unconventional mentorship dynamics, characters who defy traditional heroic archetypes, and a blend of action with humor. In interviews, Matsui has cited his time as an assistant to Yoshio Sawai as instrumental in teaching him how to incorporate comedy into his storytelling, and he has expressed a creative philosophy centered on efficiency, noting that if an element is not necessary to the story, it is not included.
