Yasunaga Ogita

Description
Yasunaga Ogita is a Japanese polar adventurer and author, recognized as the original creator of the picture book Pihotek: Walking With the Wind in the North Pole, which was later adapted into an animated short film. His work as a creator is rooted in his extensive firsthand experience in extreme polar environments, which forms the foundation of his literary and artistic contributions.

Born in 1977 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Ogita has established a career as a professional adventurer specializing in the Arctic and Antarctic. His expeditions include more than 10,000 kilometers of solo travel across both polar regions. Notably, in 2018, he became the first Japanese person to successfully complete an unsupported solo journey to the South Pole. His contributions to the field of exploration have been recognized with the Uemura Naomi Adventure Award in 2017.

Ogita's role as an original creator stems directly from his adventurous life. He is the author of the picture book Pihotek: Walking With the Wind in the North Pole, which was published by Kodansha in August 2022. The book features illustrations by artist Nana Inoue and won the Grand Prize at the 28th Japan Picture Book Awards. The work is described as a poetic account of a solitary day walking in the Arctic, drawing upon Ogita’s relationships with Inuit friends and his two decades of polar expeditions. The narrative follows a lone traveler pulling a sled across the shifting sea ice, observing Arctic animals, and experiencing a profound connection with nature. The book also includes an essay by Ogita discussing the realities of climate change.

The picture book was subsequently adapted into a short anime as the third installment of Kodansha’s Ani-hon initiative, which produces short animations based on the publisher’s picture books. The anime adaptation, titled Pihotek: Walking With the Wind in the North Pole, was released in September 2024. A 30-second version was broadcast as a television commercial, and a two-minute director’s cut was released online. The animation was directed by Kazuhiro Hotchi and produced by Fanworks. While Ogita did not directly create the anime, his original picture book and the experiences that informed it serve as the source material. Regarding the adaptation, Ogita expressed his surprise and happiness at seeing his work animated, hoping it would help convey the story’s themes of life, death, and the wind to a wider audience.

While Ogita is primarily known as an adventurer rather than a manga artist or a career anime screenwriter, his work as an author of a critically acclaimed picture book that was subsequently animated establishes his profile as an original creator in the broader landscape of anime-related media. His artistic identity is defined by a unique authenticity, translating his real-world experiences of survival and solitude in the Arctic into a narrative that explores themes of life, mortality, and the environment.
