Azychika

Description
Azychika is the credited name for a Japanese artists' collective responsible for the illustration of several manga series. Behind the collective name is a group of four female artists whose identities are partially known by their individual contributions. The group includes members known by the names Aji, Katou Chika, Fuji Subaru, and Hara, with the group name Azychika itself being a combination of Aji and Chika. The collective is sometimes credited as a firm in publication records, reflecting its collaborative structure.

The background of its members includes prior work in the manga industry before forming the group. Katou Chika is the sister of Kotono Katō, the creator of the historical manga Shoukoku no Altair, and she worked on the art for its spin-off, Shoukoku no Altair Gaiden: Toukoku no Subaru, which ran from 2016 to 2019. Fuji Subaru, born July 1, 1983, previously worked as an assistant to manga artist Yoshihiro Takaiwa and created her own series, including Doubutsu ga Oishasan!? from 2011 to 2012 and Mayoiga: Tsumi to Batsu in 2016, before joining Azychika in 2020. The group’s first major collaborative project was providing the artwork for the manga Record of Ragnarok.

Azychika is best known as the illustrator for the long-running manga series Record of Ragnarok, which began serialization in November 2017 in Coamix’s Monthly Comic Zenon magazine. The series is written by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui, with Azychika responsible for the art. The manga, which features a tournament between gods and historical human figures, has been published in North America by VIZ Media since 2022. Beyond this flagship title, the group was also responsible for the artwork of the manga Shin Gunjou Senki, serialized from 2021 to 2022. In 2022, the collective also collaborated with author Hōkō Tsuda by providing illustrations for one of his light novels.

The group’s work on Record of Ragnarok has extended to anime adaptations, where they are credited for the original character designs. They held this role for the first season of the anime in 2021, the second season in 2023, and the third season, Record of Ragnarok III. This consistent involvement in the adaptation highlights their integral role in establishing the visual identity of the franchise.

In interviews, the members of Azychika have discussed their artistic identity and creative process. They have noted that their collaborative structure is a key benefit, as having more people involved generates a wider range of ideas than a single artist might conceive. For their work on Record of Ragnarok, they approached the character designs for well-known mythological figures by drawing inspiration from unconventional sources such as gangster comics and famous actors, rather than from existing depictions in other media. The group has also cited a fondness for Marvel comics, though they noted this was not a primary influence on their designs for the series. Among the characters they have illustrated, they expressed a particular enjoyment in drawing Jack the Ripper, citing the wide range of expressions the character allowed and the stylish nature of his scenes.

The industry significance of Azychika lies in its function as a successful, collaborative artistic unit within the competitive landscape of manga production. By operating as a collective rather than under a single pen name, the group demonstrates a model of teamwork that combines distinct artistic talents to produce a consistently styled and popular long-running series. Their role is consistently defined as that of illustrators and character designers, distinct from the series’ writers, establishing a clear creative division that has supported the sustained production of Record of Ragnarok across both manga and anime formats.
