Sakae Saitō

Description
Sakae Saitō is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator best known as the creator of the post-apocalyptic road trip series Touring After the Apocalypse. Saitō’s published birthday is November 28, though the year is not publicly documented.

Saitō is the author and artist of Touring After the Apocalypse (Shūmatsu Tsūringu), which began serialization in ASCII Media Works’ seinen manga magazine Dengeki Maoh on September 26, 2020. The story follows two young women traveling through a ruined Japan on a motorcycle, focusing on sightseeing and discovery rather than survival. As of March 2025, the manga has been compiled into seven tankōbon volumes. The series has been licensed for English publication by Yen Press, with the first volume released in November 2022. An anime television series adaptation produced by studio Nexus and distributed by Aniplex is scheduled to premiere in 2025.

Beyond this original work, Saitō has contributed to several other manga projects as an illustrator. Saitō served as the artist for Katana Maidens: Toji no Miko, a manga adaptation of the original anime television series, which ran for three volumes from 2017 to 2019. Saitō also illustrated Super Cub Rei, a spin-off of the Super Cub light novel series, which began publication in 2022. Additional illustration credits include Heavy Object A, Heavy Object S, Buddy Complex: Senjou no Coupling, and Kantai Collection: Kan Colle - Itsuka Shizuka na Umi de. Saitō also produced a one-shot titled Hentai Kamen Second in 2013.

Saitō’s artistic identity is defined by a lighthearted and cozy approach to post-apocalyptic settings. Touring After the Apocalypse replaces the expected grimness of a fallen world with warmth, humor, and a spirit of exploration, as the protagonists visit tourist destinations across an empty Japan. This tonal contrast between desolate landscapes and cheerful characters has become a signature element of Saitō’s work. The series has been described as a slice-of-life journey that emphasizes friendship and discovery over conflict or despair.

Within the manga industry, Saitō has demonstrated versatility by both creating original series and adapting existing properties into manga form. The successful licensing and adaptation of Touring After the Apocalypse into an anime reflects growing international interest in Saitō’s original work. The series is published in English by Yen Press and in German by Altraverse, indicating a reach beyond the Japanese market. Saitō’s consistent output and ability to work across multiple franchises, including major properties like Kantai Collection, establish a presence in contemporary manga publishing.
