Yuhiro Tsujitsugu is a Japanese manga artist and writer, known primarily as the creator of the science fiction series Snowball Earth. Born on December 19, 1994, in Hyogo Prefecture, his career in manga began with recognition early on. In 2013, while employed at a film company, he won an honorable mention at the 86th Tezuka Awards for his series Gori Macho Heart. He later gained further industry attention by winning the Spirits Award in 2019 for Snowball Earth, the work that would become his breakout serialized title.
Tsujitsugu’s sole major work to date is Snowball Earth, which he writes and illustrates. The series began serialization in Shogakukan’s seinen manga magazine Monthly Big Comic Spirits on January 27, 2021. As of late 2025, ten compiled tankōbon volumes have been released under Shogakukan’s Big Comics imprint. The series has been licensed for English publication in North America by Viz Media, with the first volume released in April 2024. Snowball Earth is set in a near-future scenario where humanity battles extraterrestrial monsters using a giant robot named Yukio, piloted by a shy protagonist named Tetsuo. The narrative follows Tetsuo’s return to Earth after the war’s conclusion, only to find the planet frozen in a global ice age.
The series has garnered significant industry attention and acclaim. It has been publicly recommended by prominent figures in the anime and manga industries, including animator and director Hideaki Anno, video game creator Hideo Kojima, and manga artist One, the creator of One-Punch Man. In July 2025, an anime television series adaptation was announced. Produced by Studio Kai and directed by Munehisa Sakai, the anime is scheduled to premiere in April 2026. The adaptation represents a major milestone in Tsujitsugu’s career as an original creator.
Tsujitsugu’s artistic identity, as evidenced by Snowball Earth, centers on a blend of mecha action, monster designs, and post-apocalyptic survival. The story is noted for its focus on themes of human connection and personal growth against a backdrop of existential threat, with the relationship between the protagonist Tetsuo and his robotic companion Yukio serving as a central emotional anchor. His work has been described as combining large-scale science fiction concepts with intimate character drama. The success of Snowball Earth and its subsequent anime adaptation have established him as a notable emerging voice in the seinen manga genre.
