Rei Nakahara

Description
Rei Nakahara is a Japanese manga artist, mechanical designer, and animation director born on March 17, 1964, in Tokyo. He began his career in the early 1980s, making his professional debut in 1983 with the manga Deroianana-chan, published in the model magazine Dual Magazine. At that time, he used the pseudonym Rei Amuro, a name chosen as a tribute to the character Amuro Ray from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam, which he has cited as a significant influence from his student years. He was formerly a member of the creative studio Morning Star, led by illustrator and character designer Takehiko Ito.

Nakahara’s career is notable for its dual focus on manga creation and anime production. In the realm of manga, his works include titles based on established franchises, such as Mobile Suit Gundam F90 and Mobile Suit Gundam MS Generation, as well as original works like KO Century Beast Sanjuushi and NG Knight Ramune & 40 EX2: Yura Yura Galaxy Empire Great War. He also created the series Saint Engraved Evil Legend, which was discontinued.

His entry into anime production came with his role as a mechanical designer on the 1990 television series NG Knight Ramune & 40. This position marked a turning point, establishing him as a designer and leading to a long career in the industry. As a mechanical designer, his credits are extensive and include major works such as Tekkaman Blade, Blue Seed, Martian Successor Nadesico, Betterman, Zegapain, and the film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. His work on the Nadesico franchise, including the television series and the film The Prince of Darkness, is particularly well-regarded.

As an original creator, Nakahara is credited as a member of the collaborative group Project B4, alongside Hiroshi Negishi, Satoru Akahori, and Takehiko Ito. The group is credited with the original work for the OVA series KO Century Beast Sanjuushi, also known as K.O. Beast, which was released in 1992. For this series, Nakahara was also responsible for the mechanical design and art setting. The story is set 10,000 years after a catastrophic war and follows the adventures of Beast tribe members. The series was originally planned as a television anime but was ultimately released as an OVA.

Beyond design work, Nakahara has taken on roles in direction and storyboarding, often credited under variations of his name such as Rei Nakahara. He has served as a storyboard artist, episode director, and key animator on numerous productions. His credits in these capacities span a wide range of anime, including Zegapain, Polyphonica, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen, The Book of Bantorra, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, and Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory. His recent work includes storyboard and direction roles on series such as The Knight in the Area, Call of the Night Season 2, and Yaiba: Samurai Legend.

His artistic identity is closely tied to mechanical design, a field in which he has contributed to some of the most notable science fiction and mecha anime of the 1990s and 2000s. His career demonstrates a progression from manga artist to a key creative in animation, functioning in both design and directorial capacities. His longevity in the industry is evidenced by a consistent stream of credits from the late 1980s through to the 2020s, reflecting his significance as a versatile creator across multiple disciplines within anime production.
