Ikkō Tanaka

Description
Ikkō Tanaka is a Japanese manga artist born on February 26, 1986, in Miyagi Prefecture. He is the original creator behind several manga series, most notably Junket Bank, which is scheduled to receive an anime television adaptation.

Tanaka began drawing in earnest during his first year of high school and completed his first manga by the end of his second year. He moved to Tokyo after his early work received recognition in a新人賞 (rookie award), enrolling in a vocational school. He debuted as a professional at age nineteen when his one-shot story was published. Tanaka briefly worked as an assistant to manga artist Mahiro Maeda, an experience he has cited as a significant influence on his career. His first serialized manga, titled Icon, ran in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine from 2011 to 2012. He followed this with Enban Maze, a gambling-themed darts manga serialized from 2014 to 2016, and then Gainen Dorobou, an action series about beings who can steal abstract concepts like desires and courage, which was serialized from 2018 to 2019.

Tanaka is best known for creating Junket Bank, which began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump magazine on July 30, 2020. The story is set in an exclusive underground casino run by the Karasu Bank, where participants gamble with their lives in high-stakes games. The series has been collected into multiple tankōbon volumes. In March 2026, it was announced that Junket Bank would be adapted into an anime television series, scheduled to premiere in October 2026. The anime is being produced by the studio Cue, directed by Seiji Kishi, with scripts by Makoto Fukami.

Regarding his artistic identity, Tanaka has stated that his primary goal as a creator is to surprise the reader, which he considers the core element of his work's entertainment value. He describes his creative process as starting with a rough plot of only a few lines, followed by storyboards where characters are allowed to speak and act improvisationally. He notes that the final artwork is often completed through further improvisation during production. Tanaka has cited the artwork of Katsuya Terada as an early inspiration and the text of the card game Magic: The Gathering as an influence on his concise use of dialogue. He has also said he does not gamble in real life, despite the themes present in his work.
