Kitsune Tennōji
Description
Kitsune Tennōji is a Japanese manga artist and writer known for creating several long-running manga series, many of which have been adapted into anime productions. The creator has been active in the industry since the early 1990s and continues to publish work under the same pen name, which is also used for doujinshi publications with the circle Waku Waku Doubutsuen.
Tennōji first gained attention with the manga Eden's Bowy, which began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Comptiq magazine in January 1994. The series later moved to Shōnen Ace and concluded in November 2009, spanning twenty collected volumes. The story is set in a post-catastrophe world where three floating continents move through the sky. It follows a young boy named Yorn, a God Hunter separated from his mother, as he embarks on a journey to reunite with her. The manga was adapted into a twenty-six episode anime television series by Studio Deen, which aired on TV Tokyo from April to September 1999.
Tennōji is also the creator of Upotte!!, a manga series that began serialization in July 2009. The series takes place at Seishou Academy, where students are personifications of firearms training to become useful weapons. The narrative focuses on Funco, an FN FNC assault rifle, and her friends. The title is a reverse spelling of the Japanese word for gun. The manga was published by Kadokawa Shoten and had reached fourteen volumes as of its last recorded publication. An original net animation adaptation produced by Xebec was streamed on Nico Nico Douga and Crunchyroll from April to June 2012, later airing on Japanese television in July 2012. The series was directed by Takao Kato with scripts by Naruhisa Arakawa.
Beyond these major works, Tennōji has authored and illustrated several other manga series. These include Orfina and the later Orfina Saga, which were published from 1994 through 2010, as well as Gunners, which ran from 2011 to 2017. The creator has also written Upotte SISTERS!!, a spin-off or continuation of the Upotte!! universe, beginning in 2017. Tennōji has contributed as an author for the light novel Upotte!! Rifle Life and for Valkyrie no Kiko. Additional short works include Upotte!! Nano and In White: Pure Story.
The creator maintains a distinctive personal interest in firearms, which informs much of the work. Tennōji is known to collect deactivated firearms and owns real steel versions of many main characters that appear in Upotte!!. This hobby is reflected in the detailed attention to mechanical and historical accuracy found in works centered on personified weapons. An eggplant avatar created by the artist makes regular appearances in the extra pages of published works.
