Yamato Kuruneko

Yamato Kuruneko is the creator of the manga series Kuruneko, which was adapted into an anime television series of the same name. The person is a Japanese freelance designer and manga artist. After graduating from the Nagoya Zokei Junior College of Art & Design in 1993, Kuruneko worked at a design company before becoming independent in 2006. In the same year, Kuruneko started a blog named Kuruneko Yamato to share short manga essays about living with cats, initially with the goal of finding homes for stray kittens. This blog became the basis for the published manga series.

The original work Kuruneko is a comedic, slice-of-life manga that follows a woman in her thirties, a commercial designer who loves sake, and her daily life with her five cats. The story is based on the author's own experiences. The manga is published by Enterbrain. The series was adapted into a short-form anime television series produced by Dax Production and directed by Akitaro Daichi. The first season of the anime premiered on July 5, 2009, on Kansai TV and Tokai TV. A second season aired in 2010. The series consists of 100 short episodes, each approximately five minutes long.

Beyond Kuruneko, Yamato Kuruneko has created other manga works. In October 2009, the creator launched a new series titled Tonosama to Tora on the Ameba Blog website. This story is set in historical Japan and centers on a tiger-striped cat named Tora and its human master. Kuruneko has also created the work Obasan to Tome. The creator's artistic identity is closely tied to the autobiographical essay manga format, using simple, character-driven art to depict the mundane yet heartwarming events of living with multiple cats. Recurring themes include the personalities of individual cats, the search for foster parents for kittens, and the small, humorous struggles of a freelancer.
