Freddie Highmore

Description
Freddie Highmore is an English actor who has built a notable career in voice acting for animated features, including projects closely associated with anime and Japanese animation studios. He is best known for leading roles in live-action television and film, but his voice work has brought several animated characters to life, with his most prominent anime role being a droid named Teto in the Disney+ series Star Wars: Visions.

Highmore began his voice acting career in the mid-2000s. One of his earliest roles was providing the voice for the character Pantalaimon in the 2007 fantasy film The Golden Compass. He then voiced the lead role of the titular robot boy in the 2009 computer-animated film Astro Boy, a role which brought him into the orbit of a quintessential Japanese manga and anime property. His other early voice credits include the English dub of the French production Arthur and the Invisibles and its sequels.

In the following decade, Highmore continued to work in animation. In 2013, he voiced the lead role of Justin in the Spanish animated film Justin and the Knights of Valour. He also voiced the character Ben in the 2020 animated feature Dragon Rider, also known as HeavenQuest, where he starred alongside Felicity Jones and Patrick Stewart. His voice acting has extended to other projects including The Canterville Ghost in 2023.

Highmore entered the world of anime directly with his role in Star Wars: Visions Volume 3, a series of animated short films produced by top Japanese animation studios. He provided the English voice for Teto, a friendly and loyal droid, in the episode The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope, produced by the renowned studio Production I.G. The episode serves as a sequel to a story from the first volume of Visions, and Highmore’s character plays a key role in saving the human protagonist, Lah Kara. This performance is his most direct contribution to the anime medium.

Several of Highmore’s animated projects have involved significant collaborations with notable names in the entertainment industry. He has worked alongside actors such as John Malkovich and Eugene Levy in The Canterville Ghost and Thomas Brodie-Sangster in Dragon Rider. His early film work also frequently involved director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp, though these were live-action collaborations rather than voice roles.

For his live-action work, particularly his performance on the television series Bates Motel and his lead role on The Good Doctor, Highmore has received critical acclaim, including nominations for Critics’ Choice Television Awards and Satellite Awards. While his voice acting has not garnered the same level of individual award recognition, his consistent work in major animated films and a key role in the Star Wars anime anthology stand as significant achievements in this area of his career.
