Haro Asō
Description
Haro Asō is a Japanese manga artist known for creating the original stories behind several successful manga and anime titles. Born in Osaka, Japan in 1980, Asō attended Kansai University but ultimately dropped out to pursue a career in manga creation. He made his professional debut in 2005 with a one-shot titled YUNGE! before beginning his first serialized work, Hyde & Closer, which ran from December 2007 to July 2009. Asō's breakthrough came with Alice in Borderland, serialized from November 2010 to March 2016. The survival thriller follows protagonists forced to compete in deadly games in a deserted parallel Tokyo. The manga was a commercial success with over 1.3 million copies in circulation and received two major adaptations: an original video animation series and a live-action Netflix television drama. Following the conclusion of Alice in Borderland, Asō announced his intention to retire from illustrating. However, he continued working in the industry by shifting his focus to story development. Beginning in October 2018, he became the writer for Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, with Kotaro Takata handling the illustrations. The series combines zombie horror with comedy as a young man creates a bucket list to fully live his life during an apocalypse. It was adapted into both an anime television series and a live-action film. Asō also provided the story for Noyu Girl from August 2021 to August 2022, illustrated by Shirō Yoshida. While primarily retired from drawing, Asō briefly returned to illustrate the sequel series Alice in Borderland: Retry following the success of the Netflix adaptation. His career reflects a transition from creating complete manga works to focusing specifically on original story conception, frequently collaborating with other artists for visual production.
