Petosu

Description
Petosu is the pen name of a Japanese manga creator known for works that blend supernatural elements with everyday school life and social commentary. The creator is most widely recognized as the original author and illustrator of the manga series Interviews with Monster Girls, also known as Demi-chan wa Kataritai. Petosu is also credited with creating the manga series Tsurezure Children.

The manga Interviews with Monster Girls began serialization in September 2014 in Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine Young Magazine the 3rd. The series later moved to Monthly Young Magazine, where it concluded in December 2022. The complete series was compiled into eleven tankōbon volumes. The story follows a high school biology teacher who interviews and befriends several demi-humans, known as demis, including a vampire, a dullahan, a yuki-onna, and a succubus, exploring their unique challenges and societal integration.

The series was adapted into a twelve-episode anime television series by the studio A-1 Pictures, which aired from January to March 2017. The anime was directed by Ryo Ando, with scripts by Takao Yoshioka.

Petosu’s artistic identity is characterized by the use of supernatural beings as a lens to explore relatable, real-world issues such as social prejudice, acceptance, and the experience of living with a visible difference or disability. The creator’s approach is often rational and scientific, using a teacher protagonist to demystify legends and examine supernatural conditions with a grounded, empathetic perspective. The art style is noted for being colorful and expressive, effectively bringing the characters and their emotional states to life, though it is sometimes described as having simple backgrounds.

In the industry, Petosu is significant for creating a work that contributed to the popularity of the “monster girls” subgenre in the mid-2010s while distinguishing itself through a thoughtful, low-conflict narrative focused on dialogue and personal growth rather than action or fantasy adventure. The series received an English-language release from Kodansha Comics USA, broadening its international reach and readership.
