Hideyasu Takahashi
Description
Hideyasu Takahashi is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator born on December 2, 1975, in Iwate Prefecture. He is best known as the sole creator of the long-running manga series Kaitou Joker, which was later adapted into a multi-season anime under the title Mysterious Joker.
Takahashi began his career as a mangaka with Kaitou Joker, which started as a one-shot before beginning serialization in 2007 in Shogakukan’s Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special magazine. The series later moved to the main Monthly CoroCoro Comic and CoroCoro Dragon magazines, where it ran until 2017. The collected volumes were published under Shogakukan’s Tentōmushi CoroCoro Comics imprint, with 26 to 27 volumes released over the course of its decade-long run. The series proved popular enough to earn the children’s category award at the 58th Shogakukan Manga Awards.
The story of Kaitou Joker follows the title character, a phantom thief known as the Miracle Maker, who travels the world with his apprentice Hachi to steal treasurers while evading traps set by police and rival thieves. The manga’s success led to an anime adaptation produced by Asatsu DK and animated by Shin-Ei Animation. The first season premiered in October 2014 on Tokyo MX and Kids Station, with direction by Yukiyo Teramoto and series composition by Dai Satō. Due to the anime’s popularity, three additional seasons followed: a second season in April 2015, and a third and fourth season in 2016. Across all four seasons, the anime totaled 52 episodes.
Beyond the original manga and its anime adaptations, Takahashi’s creation expanded into other media. A light novel series titled Kaitou Joker was published in seven volumes between 2014 and 2019. A Nintendo 3DS action game, Kaitō Joker: Toki o Koeru Kaitō to Ushinawareta Hōseki, was released by Bandai Namco Games in June 2015. Takahashi continued to work within the franchise after the conclusion of the main series, authoring Kaitou Shounen Jokers, which ran for five volumes from 2017 to 2019. In 2024, he returned to the property with Kaitou Joker Encore, a new series that began serialization in Weekly CoroCoro Comic in April of that year.
As a creator, Takahashi’s artistic identity is closely tied to the themes of his major work. Kaitou Joker blends elements of adventure, comedy, and mystery, with a focus on elaborate heists, illusion-based tricks, and a colorful cast of rival thieves and quirky law enforcement characters. The series consistently emphasizes themes of rivalry, showmanship, and the importance of chosen family, as the protagonist and his allies were all trained by the same mentor figure. The longevity of the franchise, spanning over a decade of manga serialization and four anime seasons, established Takahashi as a significant contributor to Shogakukan’s CoroCoro brand, which targets young readers. His continued work on the series with the 2024 Encore revival demonstrates the lasting appeal of his creation within the children’s and family entertainment market.
