Paul Brizzi

Description
Paul Brizzi is a French artist, animator, film director, and illustrator known for a career that spans the European comic and American animation industries. He was born on December 24, 1951, in Paris, France, and is the twin brother of Gaëtan Brizzi, with whom he has collaborated almost exclusively throughout his professional life.

Paul Brizzi's background is rooted in formal artistic training and a connection to the French animation tradition. He and his brother studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and were mentored by Paul Grimault, the renowned French animator and director of the classic film The King and the Bird. The Brizzi brothers gained early recognition in the 1970s for their work in animated shorts, most notably winning the César Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1977 for their film Fracture. This success led to the founding of their own animation studio, Brizzi Films, in 1986.

As creators of original animated works, the Brizzis directed the feature film Asterix Versus Caesar in 1985, an adaptation of the popular French comic series. They also directed the animated film Babar: The Movie in 1989, based on the elephant character created by Jean de Brunhoff. Their work in animation brought them to the attention of The Walt Disney Company, to whom they sold their studio in 1989. As part of Disney, Paul Brizzi served as a unit producer, sequence director, and storyboard artist on a number of high-profile projects. His filmography from this period includes work on DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, A Goofy Movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, and the Firebird Suite segment of Fantasia 2000.

Following their departure from Disney in 2001, Paul Brizzi returned to a focus on personal artistic projects, including graphic novels and illustrated adaptations of classic literature. As a comic artist and writer, he has produced numerous works in collaboration with his brother, almost exclusively published by the French publisher Futuropolis. These works include La Cavale du Dr Destouches, based on the novels of Louis-Ferdinand Céline; L'Automne à Pékin and L'Écume des jours, based on the novels of Boris Vian; Les Contes drôlatiques, based on the works of Honoré de Balzac; and L'Enfer de Dante, a graphic novel adaptation of the first part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. An upcoming work scheduled for 2025 is an adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. His artistic identity in these works is characterized by a painterly and dramatic visual style, often bringing a cinematic sensibility to dense literary narratives.

The industry significance of Paul Brizzi lies in his unique position as a French artist who successfully transitioned from European independent animation to major Hollywood studio production, while maintaining a parallel career creating literary graphic novels. He is one of the few French animators to have directed a studio for Disney and to have contributed to multiple landmark films during the Disney Renaissance era. His later work in comics continues to receive attention for its ambitious adaptations of classic texts, presented in a lavish, illustrated format.
