Omar Chaparro
Description
Omar Chaparro is a Mexican actor, comedian, and television personality who has built a substantial career as a voice actor for Spanish-language dubs of animated feature films, as well as for original English-language roles in live-action and animated productions.
Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1974, Chaparro is widely recognized in the Latin American dubbing industry for his work on major Hollywood animated movies. He is best known as the Spanish-language voice of Po, the titular protagonist of the "Kung Fu Panda" franchise, a role originally performed in English by Jack Black. He also voiced the villain Syndrome in the Spanish dub of the Pixar film "The Incredibles". His other animated voice credits from earlier in his career include roles in "Ice Age: Collision Course" as Buck, "The Angry Birds Movie" as Red, and "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" as Chester V.
In addition to his work in dubbing foreign animation, Chaparro has performed original voice roles for English-language films. He portrayed the character Sebastian in the 2019 live-action/CGI hybrid film "Pokémon Detective Pikachu". Sebastian is a flamboyant and energetic Pokémon trainer who serves as a minor antagonist, commanding a powerful Charizard in underground battles. Chaparro has stated that the film's director, Rob Letterman, gave him significant creative freedom for the performance, and he modeled the character after Jim Morrison of The Doors, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, and Chris Tucker's Ruby Rhod from "The Fifth Element". Chaparro was offered the role directly by the production company, without needing to audition, based on their positive experience working with him on a previous, unreleased film.
Chaparro is also attached to an upcoming animated feature that blends DC Comics mythology with Mexican history. He is set to voice Yoka, an Aztec-era version of the Joker, in the Warner Bros. Animation film "Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios" (Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires). In this film, which is scheduled for release in 2025, the character is reimagined as a priest inspired by the god Huitzilopochtli during the time of the Spanish conquest.
Chaparro's other voice work includes the lead role of Condorito in the 2017 animated film "Condorito: The Movie" and a role in the animated feature "Eagle and Jaguar, The Legendary Warriors". His career spans both original English-language performances and extensive contributions to Spanish-language adaptations of major animation franchises.
