Gido Amagakure

Description
Gido Amagakure is a Japanese manga artist whose professional career began in 2007 with the serialization of Fantasm in the magazine Wings, published by Shinshokan. Prior to making their debut, Amagakure worked for approximately three years as a kindergarten teacher, a period during which they began creating doujinshi, or self-published works, under the circle name KIOKS before formally entering the industry. The artist is known to have been born on August 21, though the year of birth has not been publicly disclosed.

Amagakure has created a diverse body of work across multiple demographics, including josei, seinen, and yaoi genres. Among their notable original manga series is Amaama to Inazuma, also known as Sweetness and Lightning, which was serialized in Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine. The series follows a widowed father learning to cook for his young daughter and received an anime adaptation that began airing in July 2016.

Another significant work is A Galaxy Next Door (Otonari ni Ginga), which was serialized in the same magazine, Good! Afternoon, from April 2020 to June 2023. The story revolves around a struggling manga artist and a woman from a family of "shooting star people" who become bound by a supernatural pact. The series was collected in six tankōbon volumes published by Kodansha. It was adapted into both a 12-episode anime television series by Asahi Production and a 32-episode television drama that aired on NHK, both of which premiered in April 2023. For the anime adaptation, Amagakure is credited as the original creator and also provided the original character designs.

Recurring themes in Amagakure's work often center on domestic life, family relationships, and gentle romance, frequently with a touch of supernatural or fantastical elements. A Galaxy Next Door combines the pressures of a creative career with a developing romantic relationship complicated by a magical bond. Similarly, Sweetness and Lightning focuses on the nuances of single parenthood and the connection forged through shared meals. The artist has also produced works in the boys' love and girls' love genres, showcasing a range in storytelling.

Within the manga industry, Amagakure holds significance as a creator whose works have successfully transitioned to multiple media formats. The simultaneous production of both an anime and a live-action drama for A Galaxy Next Door within the same season is a notable achievement that underscores the broad appeal of their storytelling. Their works are published in English in North America by Kodansha USA, extending their international readership.
