Whale
Description
Whale is a South Korean artist best known as the illustrator of the webtoon adaptation of the web novel Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion. Whale is credited as the artist and character designer for the manhwa version of the story, while Milcha is the original author of the source web novel.
The webtoon adaptation illustrated by Whale was serialized on the Korean digital platform KakaoPage from September 3, 2017 to March 22, 2021. The complete series has been collected into nine print volumes published by D&C Media in South Korea. An English-language print edition is published by Yen Press, with the first volume released in June 2022. Whale is consistently credited as the sole illustrator for the entire series.
The story is a romance fantasy isekai in which the protagonist, Eunha Park, dies and is reincarnated as Raeliana McMillan, a minor character from a novel who is fated to be murdered by her fiancé. Using her knowledge of the original plot, Raeliana makes a deal with Duke Noah Wynknight to change her destiny. The manhwa falls within the popular Korean webtoon genres of fantasy romance and reincarnation narratives.
Whale's artistic work on the series served as the basis for an anime television adaptation produced by studio Typhoon Graphics, which aired from April to June 2023. In the anime's credits, Whale is listed for original character design based on the manhwa. The anime adaptation brought Whale's visual character designs to a broader international audience through streaming platforms.
Available publication records indicate that Whale collaborated directly with original author Milcha, with Whale responsible for translating the prose web novel into the visual webtoon format. This type of collaboration between a writer and a dedicated artist is a common production model in the Korean webtoon industry, where original novels are frequently adapted into serialized comic formats before potential animation projects. The success of Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion represents one example of a Korean web novel achieving a full adaptation pathway from prose to webtoon to anime.
