Goro Taniguchi

Description
Goro Taniguchi was born on October 18, 1966, in Nisshin, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He graduated from Japan Film School in 1989. His early career began at the studio J.C.STAFF before he moved to Sunrise, where he initially worked in setting production and as a storyboard artist and episode director on various series throughout the 1990s. This period included work on titles such as Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, and The King of Braves GaoGaiGar. He has since worked as a freelancer.

Taniguchi made his directorial debut with the One Piece OVA Defeat the Pirate Ganzack in 1998. His first series as director was the 1999 science fiction anime Infinite Ryvius. He is widely recognized for his work on a number of original anime projects. In 2001, he directed and created the original story for s-CRY-ed. He followed this in 2003 by directing Planetes, a hard science fiction series that won the Seiun Award. His career reached a new level of prominence with the 2006 series Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, which he co-created and directed, and its 2008 second season, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2. More recently, he directed the 2021 television series Back Arrow, for which he is also credited as a co-creator.

His directorial work extends to feature films. He directed the 2009 film Jungle Emperor Leo: The Brave Can Change the Future, the 2019 film Code Geass Lelouch of the Re;surrection, the 2022 film One Piece Film: Red, and the 2024 film Bloody Escape, for which he also handled the original concept and screenplay. He was also the chief director for the 2016 series Active Raid and the 2021 series Skate-Leading Stars. In addition to his animation direction, Taniguchi has contributed as an original scriptwriter for manga, including Code Geass: Jet-Black Renya and Atrail - Nisekawiteki Nichijou to Senmitsu Element.

Across his body of work, Taniguchi has frequently engaged with science fiction and mecha genres, often exploring conflicts arising from ambitious world-building and societal structures. His directorial approach balances large-scale narrative scope with grounded character dynamics, as seen in the realistic astronaut training of Planetes. A recurring artistic identity is his focus on original concepts, with many of his most significant projects, such as s-CRY-ed, Code Geass, and Back Arrow, being creations of his own devising. In interviews regarding his 2026 film Paris ni Saku Etoile, he noted his desire to create a work that appeals to a wide audience, moving away from sci-fi and robots, and emphasized a commitment to traditional hand-drawn animation techniques. Similarly, in his role as creative producer for the 2025 project Enter the Garden, he has discussed fostering creative freedom among staff and considering fan input as part of the production process. His career reflects a long-standing presence in the industry as a director and creator known for both commercially successful franchises and original, conceptually-driven works.
