Ryūhō Ōkawa

Description
Ryūhō Ōkawa is recognized as an original creator and executive producer for several animated feature films, a role that stems from his broader career as a prolific author and the founder of the Happy Science religious movement. Born on July 7, 1956, in Tokushima, Japan, and a graduate of the University of Tokyo, Ōkawa worked as a financial trader before undergoing what he described as a spiritual enlightenment in 1981. In 1986, he established Happy Science, a new religious movement, and used his prolific writing as a primary vehicle for its teachings. He published hundreds of books on spirituality, religion, and self-development, and it is these writings that form the basis of his work in anime and manga. He passed away on March 2, 2023.

Ōkawa is credited as the original creator of numerous animated films produced by Happy Science's entertainment divisions, including HS Pictures Studio. His first foray into animation was the 1991 children's OVA Shiawasette Naani (What is Happiness?), which he based on his own children's book. This was followed by a series of theatrical films that adapt his longer spiritual texts. These include The Laws of the Sun (2000), The Golden Laws (2003), and The Laws of Eternity (2006). More recent productions include Dragon Heart: Adventures Beyond This World, a 2025 animated fantasy film for which Ōkawa is credited with the original story, the executive production, and even the lyrics and music for the theme song. Other notable anime films based on his works include The Mystical Laws (2012), The Laws of the Universe (2015), and The Laws of the Universe: The Age of El Cantare (2018).

The adaptation history of Ōkawa's work is direct and in-house; his books serve as the source material for films produced almost exclusively by companies affiliated with his religious organization. These films are not commercial adaptations by outside studios but are internal productions designed to visualize and disseminate his spiritual teachings. The films consistently explore a core set of themes that reflect the doctrines of Happy Science, including the nature of the spirit world, reincarnation, the existence of a supreme being named El Cantare, the importance of love and self-reflection, and a grand, secret history of human civilization guided by enlightened masters.

In terms of industry significance, Ōkawa's anime works represent a unique intersection of religious media and commercial animation. Despite receiving little mainstream critical attention and often polarizing audiences due to their overtly doctrinal content, the productions are notable for their high production values and for having enlisted prominent industry talent. For instance, the 2025 film Dragon Heart featured key animators who worked on Neon Genesis Evangelion and voice actors known for major series like Re:Zero. The films are distributed theatrically in Japan and have occasionally been released internationally, positioning them as a specialized but persistent niche within the Japanese anime industry.
