Fumiaki Maruto

Description
Fumiaki Maruto is a Japanese writer and screenwriter known for his work in the visual novel, light novel, and anime industries. Born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, his birthday is December 21st. He began his career writing scenarios for adult visual novels, with his debut work being Ripple: Welcome to Blue Seal. Maruto gained early recognition for his work on titles such as Chocolat: Maid Cafe "Curio", Parfait: Chocolat Second Brew, and A Promise in the Blue Sky, the last of which won several awards including the Grand Prize at the 2006 Bishojo Game Awards. He is known to have been a member of the scenario writers' collective Kikakuya.

Maruto is best known as the original creator of the romantic comedy series Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend. He began the story as a light novel, which was published by Fujimi Shobo under its Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint, with illustrations by Kurehito Misaki. The series ran for 13 main volumes from July 2012 to October 2017. The success of the light novel led to a multimedia franchise, including two manga adaptations for which Maruto is credited as the original creator. The first is How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend, illustrated by Takeshi Moriki. The second is a spin-off focusing on the character Eriri, titled Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata: egoistic-lily, illustrated by Niito. A third spin-off manga, Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata: Koisuru Metronome, which centers on the character Utaha Kasumigaoka, also lists Maruto as the original creator, with art by Sabu Musha.

In addition to serving as the original creator for the Saekano franchise, Maruto was also the primary scriptwriter for its anime adaptations. He was responsible for the series composition and scripts for both the first season, Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend, which aired in 2015, and the second season, Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend Flat, which aired in 2017. Both seasons were produced by A-1 Pictures. He also wrote the script for the franchise's concluding animated film, Saekano the Movie: Finale, which was produced by CloverWorks and released in 2019. His other notable anime credits include series composition and script writing for White Album 2, Classroom Crisis, and Engage Kiss.

Maruto's work is characterized by a focus on nuanced relationships and dialogue, often blending romantic comedy with dramatic tension. He is known for creating complex heroines and protagonists whose actions are frequently informed by past trauma, a trait analyzed by critics and fans. His early work in visual novels often led to definitive, happy conclusions, but his later works like White Album 2 are noted for exploring more ambiguous and emotionally challenging narratives. He has also expressed a notable fondness for the aesthetic of black stockings, which is reflected in character designs across his works. Through his extensive work across game, novel, and anime mediums, Maruto has established himself as a significant creator in the Japanese romance and drama genres.
