Erubo Hijihara
Description
Erubo Hijihara is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator. She was born on August 12, 1995, in Hyogo Prefecture and is a graduate of Kyoto Seika University, where she studied character design. Her professional career began after winning an award in the Jump Square Crown Newcomer Manga Contest, a achievement that led to her works being published by Shueisha.
Hijihara is credited as the illustrator for the manga adaptation of the 2022 animated film Bubble. The film was produced by Wit Studio and directed by Tetsurō Araki, with Hijihara’s manga serialized in Shōnen Jump+ from April to May 2022. The series was published in two volumes by Shueisha. She is also the author of original manga series including Our Lonely War (known in Japanese as Futaribocchi Sensou) and Zetsubou no Trigger.
Her creative work is heavily influenced by Western films, news reports, and real-world events, which she cites as primary sources of inspiration for her storylines. Themes of family bonds and connection are recurring elements in her narratives, often explored through central sibling relationships. In an interview, she stated that using family ties allows her to quickly establish character motivations and create stories that resonate emotionally with readers.
Hijihara has spoken openly about her self-taught approach to manga layout, noting that her academic focus was on illustration rather than sequential art. She has described the process of learning to create dynamic paneling and contrast between scenes as an ongoing challenge and a key area of personal artistic development. Her work on Our Lonely War, which concluded after three volumes, features protagonists dealing with physical limitations and dark fantasy elements, choices influenced by collaboration with her editorial team. She has cited manga artists Katsura Hoshino, creator of D.Gray-man, and Yoshitoki Ōima, creator of A Silent Voice, as significant influences on her style.
