Tsunehiko Kamijō
Description
Tsunehiko Kamijō was a Japanese singer, actor, and voice artist whose career spanned over six decades. Born on March 7, 1940, in Asahi Village, Nagano Prefecture, he initially began his career as a singer in 1962, achieving significant success in the 1970s with hit songs like Tabidachi no Uta (The Song of Departure) as part of the group Rokumonsen. He later expanded into acting and voice work, remaining active in the entertainment industry until his passing on July 22, 2025, at the age of 85.
Kamijō is perhaps best known to international audiences for his voice roles in several animated films by Studio Ghibli. He appeared in multiple works by director Hayao Miyazaki, providing the voice for the leader of the Mamma Aiuto Gang in Porco Rosso (1992), the role of Gonza in Princess Mononoke (1997), and the character of Yakuza (the Head Stallsman) in the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away (2001). Beyond his Ghibli work, he also served as the original Japanese voice for Sebastian the crab in the Disney animated feature The Little Mermaid, a role for which he also performed the song Under the Sea in Japanese.
While the example provided states that Kamijō played the role of Boss in the series Kentauros no Densetsu, his voice acting credits extend to numerous other areas. His career was characterized by significant collaborations, particularly with Studio Ghibli and its composer Joe Hisaishi. Beyond studio animation, his deep voice was also featured in puppet animation, radio dramas, and documentary narration. His contributions to the arts were recognized posthumously when he was awarded a Special Achievement Award at the 67th Japan Record Awards in December 2025.
