Yuji Horii is a Japanese video game designer, scenario writer, and the original creator of the Dragon Quest franchise. Born on January 6, 1954, on Awaji Island in Hyōgo Prefecture, Horii graduated from Waseda University’s Department of Literature. Before becoming a game designer, he worked as a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines, including a video game column for Weekly Shōnen Jump. His early work on adventure games, such as The Portopia Serial Murder Case, helped establish his reputation as a writer and designer before he created the original Dragon Quest role-playing game in 1986.

While Horii is primarily known as a game developer, he is extensively credited as the original creator behind numerous anime and manga adaptations of the Dragon Quest series. His role as the originator of the characters, world, and basic story concepts has been acknowledged across a wide range of media. For example, he is credited as the original creator for the anime film Dragon Quest Saga: Emblem of Roto, the original net animation Dragon Quest X: Bōkensha-tachi no Kiseki, and the 1991 television series Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken. He also holds this credit for the associated films, including Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken Buchiya bure!! Shinsei Rokudai Shoguo and its related movie shorts. For the 2020 remake of the Dai no Daibōken series, titled Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, Horii is credited as the original creator and also served in a supervision capacity over the original manga.

In addition to the Dai no Daibōken franchise, Horii played a direct creative role in the 2019 computer-animated film Dragon Quest Your Story. This film is based on the storyline of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, and Horii is officially credited for the original story and supervision.
