Kōji Aihara
Description
Koji Aihara is a Japanese manga artist known for his distinctive comedic voice and satirical take on the manga industry. Born in Hokkaido in 1963, Aihara grew up reading the works of Osamu Tezuka, a foundational influence on his artistic development. He made his professional debut in 1983 with the series Hachigatsu no Nureta Pantsu, which was serialized in the influential Weekly Manga Action magazine.
Aihara is perhaps best known as the co-creator of the satirical how-to guide Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga, a sharp and humorous critique of the commercial and creative conventions of the manga industry. His body of work includes a diverse range of titles such as Bunka Jinrui Gag, Koojien, Mujina, and Manka, the last of which has been noted for its ability to capture a wide spectrum of human emotion within the concise four-panel yonkoma format. He has also created a yonkoma parody of a Japanese dictionary, further demonstrating his penchant for wordplay and metafictional humor. Another notable manga series is Z ~Zed~, a horror title that ran from 2011 to 2015.
As an original creator in anime, Aihara is credited for the OVA adaptation of his manga Katte ni Shirokuma, which was released in 1987. This work serves as a clear example of his manga serving as the source material for an animated production. Beyond print and animation, Aihara has also extended his creative reach into the video game industry, providing character design for the role-playing games Maka Maka and Day of the Idea (known in Japanese as Idea no Hi).
Aihara's artistic identity is firmly rooted in comedy and satire. His work is recognized for breaking new ground in the themes explored in gag manga, often executed with what critics have described as meticulous detail. This commitment to comedic artistry was celebrated in a 2018 exhibition titled "35 Years of Koji Aihara" at Gallery Little High in Tokyo, which showcased sketches and characters from his popular series like Mujina and Z~Zed, as well as his video game design work. Through his prolific career, Koji Aihara has established himself as a significant and pioneering figure in the world of gag manga, respected for his unique ability to blend humor with incisive social and industrial commentary.
