He later passed an audition for the studio of renowned director Yukio Ninagawa and became a member of that theater company. In his late twenties, he met playwright Koki Mitani and joined the theater group Tokyo Sunshine Boys, appearing in numerous stage productions. Following the group's disbandment in 1994, he continued to focus on work in film, television, and theater, appearing frequently in Koki Mitani's projects.

In the first season of the television drama Gokusen, he played the role of Hiro Wakamatsu, a member of the Oedo yakuza family. He is officially credited as Kozo Wakamatsu in the second season and the 2009 film Gokusen: The Movie, where he continued to play a version of the same character.
