Akira Nakao
Description
Akira Nakao was a Japanese actor and television personality whose career spanned from 1964 until his death in 2024. While he is a well-known figure in Japanese entertainment, his work as a voice actor for anime is not a significant part of his professional profile. The vast majority of his on-screen and voice credits are for live-action television dramas, films, and video games.
Nakao was born on August 11, 1942, in Kisarazu, Chiba, Japan, and was a graduate of Musashino Art University. Throughout his career, he was represented by the agency Furutachi Project. He was a familiar face in Japanese cinema, particularly for his roles in period dramas (jidaigeki) and contemporary stories. He is recognized by fans of the long-running series Abarenbō Shōgun for his twenty-year portrayal of the scheming Tokugawa Muneharu. His film work includes appearances in six Godzilla movies as well as the 1992 Juzo Itami film Minbo: the Gentle Art of Japanese Extortion.
In the context of anime and related media, Nakao is best known for his role as Hiroshi Uchiyamada in the Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) franchise. He voiced the character in the television series Shonan Junai-gumi! as well as in the GTO Drama Special and the main GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka series. It is important to note that these are primarily live-action adaptations where he provided the voice for the character, distinguishing his work from traditional voice acting for animated productions. Outside of the GTO franchise, his voice work extended into video games, notably providing the voice for Ryuzo Genda in the Sega game Judgment, which is a spin-off of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series.
Nakao also had a parallel career as an artist, having won the Bronze Award at the Le Salon exhibition in France in 1980, followed by the Grand Prix in 1981 and an International Award in 1982. In 2015, he received the award for Best Supporting Actor at the Tokyo Sports Film Award for his role in the film Ryuzo and the Seven Henchmen. Akira Nakao passed away on May 16, 2024, at the age of 81.
